Medieval Museum

The Civic Medieval Museum offers a glimpse into Bologna’s medieval past, featuring artifacts from the early Middle Ages (7th-9th centuries) and the famous funerary monuments of the doctors from the ancient University.

The collection includes sculptures and works from the 14th to the 16th centuries, Renaissance art from the 15th and 16th centuries (Giambologna, Algardi, Bernini), weapons, French and Italian ivories, Murano glass, and precious illuminated manuscripts.

Among its most notable pieces are the Ark of Giovanni d’Andrea (mid-14th century) and the prestigious bronze aquamanile depicting a knight. Also noteworthy is the grand statue of Boniface VIII in gilded copper sheets, made in 1301 to commemorate the Pope’s efforts in ending the war between Bologna and Ferrara.
